We have a new President. The mud slinging is over. McCain proved he is a class act and if he had conducted his campaign as he conducted his defeat, there may have been another ending here (and he would have had to have choosen another VP candidate ).
There will be a honeymoon period where, I believe, politicos will work together. I hope that lasts a long time. We need a better tomorrow, in more ways then one, for all of us.
For me, this is really the dawn of a new day, a new America. I have lived a long life (hopefully it will be even longer). I have seen the Kennedys come and go; their era of hope that inspried my generation to change and work for a united America, one nation dedicated to the promise of freedom for all.
I have watched and marched during the civil rights movement, brought to tears by Martin Luther King’s oratory and commitment to non-violence, to freedom for all. Some might label me a liberal; they are wrong. I am a mere mortal, subject to the same human frailites and misgivings of most. I believe in people; in the “certain inalienable rights” of each person to live their best lives, helping one another to achieve equality in achieving dreams.
Today, I am extremely moved by the election of Barack Obama as OUR President. The symbolism of this election is a call to all people: black, white, Christian, Jew, Muslim, native born American, Latino, immigrant, old an young, that racial intolerance, inequality, hatred and its associated negativity and bias against our fellow citizens, will no longer be tolerated. He, I believe, will inspire the good in all of us to be our best and do our best for our country and our fellow citizens. He stands for the end of bias and hatred of any kind. There is no room for this, anywhere, anyplace, anytime.
Unfortunately, in this day of new beginnings, I still see the fear mongers and biased individuals and groups who spew the prejudice and hatred and try to use fear tactics to promote anger and mistrust on blogs and social network sites, in hopes of promoting hatred and hate crimes. To those of you who wish to go backwards and believe you can resurrect the past and control the future, I have a message for you: never again, no more, nada! Get a grip on yourselves and join those of us who want a better tomorrow for our children and grandchildren. If you can’t join us, please leave us.
I would like to close my blog today with 2 videos: one from the past (which is now the future) and one from today, which is also the future. And to wish all of us: peace and unity.
