Erickson launched a new booth at the AARP convention in Washington DC which started yesterday. Deb Dasch, the editor of the Erickson Tribune, and I walked the floors of the huge convention center to get a taste of the convention and to entice people to visit our new booth. It was great fun, tiring, but also overwhelming. So much going on and so little time to take it all in.
What I learned from the vast groups of people with whom I got to speak is this: 1) Most in attendance seemed to be over 60;2) Lots of couples who come with other couples and use this as a “safe, afffordable, vacation time where you can actually learn”; 3) Even large numbers of people who come as individuals for the same reasons mentioned above.

I’ve just returned from the kick-off for this year’s AARP convention, and since I’m not yet old enough to have my own membership card, its made me truly anticipate the day that I do.
There are people here from all walks of life, all ethnicities… people from all 50 states and over 13 countries. Some are dressed in Sunday best, others in comfortable, casual clothing and ready for a long day of learning, walking, and exploring both the convention and the nation’s capital.
There is excitement and anticipation in the air, not to mention a sense of purpose–the people attending seem to be creating an energy all their own. With 40 million members, it’s no surprise that even a fraction of those members attending can cause an electric force all their own.

So, a few members of Erickson Tribune staff have arrived at AARP’s National Event & Expo in Washington D.C.
We will be blogging about our experiences through out the next few days in hopes of offering our readers an insiders’ look at the largest convention focused on living and enjoying life after 50.
Over 25,000 boomers from all 50 states and more than 13 countries will be sharing in this dynamic gathering over the next 3 days. There are more than 450 exhibitors focusing on technology, lifestyle, home, health, work, travel and fun.
Perusing my schedule, I am slightly overwhelmed–I’m not sure what to start with first. There are workshops, speakers, tours, lifestyle sessions, educational sessions, movies, and a variety of entertainment. The topics cover almost everything the human mind could even wonder about.
Not to mention, there’s a celebration of AARP’s 50th Anniversary on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial this afternoon. It will feature a multitude of speakers including Leeza Gibbons, Sally Field, Martina Navratilova, Dara Torres, Richard Petty, Buzz Aldrin, and Patti Austin to name a few.
This convention is an ALL DAY, ALL NIGHT symposium of fun and education for your Freedom Years!
