More old commercials, Part 2

More old commercials, Part 2

Not sure if people who read this know that Erickson’s Corporate headquarters is located in Catonsville, Md., which is a suburb of Baltimore. If you’re been following the weather at all, you know that we’ve been absolutely pummeled with snow. We’re finally digging out, so because of that, I haven’t been able to update the blog until now.

While we’ve been hunkered down getting cabin fever, I was doing a lot of Internet surfing and came up with some more classic commercials.

Well, I’ll bet you had no idea that cigarettes allowed so much fresh air into your lungs. Thank goodness the old commercials were around back then to alert you of this medical knowledge. Check out this ridiculousness for Salem cigarettes.

And if you thought that was an impressive spin job, try this one. The Kool marketing department is able to combine the unbelievable fallacy that your throat will feel great smoking a Kool with the desire to get young children interested in smoking. It’s truly an impressive one-two punch!

And then, with Pall Mall (which unbeknownst to me is actually pronounced “PA-il MAel”), I appreciate how they sneak in the pseudo-science into how “fine tobacco is its own best filter…And look how Pall Mall’s greater length travels the smoke further. Filters the smoke naturally and makes it mild.”

The sophisticated graphics are what sold me on the healthiness of cigarettes!

After you see all of these commercials, you have to wonder what commercials we see every day that are going to seem so absurd in the future.

Here’s one more to leave you with — a classic ad for Mountain Dew. This one just makes me laugh.

Old TV Commercials, Part 1

Old TV Commercials, Part 1

Every once in a while, I like to get into my time machine and take a look at old commercials to see what life was like way back when. It’s amazing how much these old ads can tell you about that period of time as well as what popular culture was like.

For instance here’s one for Kool-Aid. I believe it is from the 50s. My favorite line in the ad: “You know it’s pure and good. It has the Parents Magazine seal. And it’s so thrifty! . . . Just add Kool-Aid to water with ice, add some sugar, and stir.” Notice how the woman never says exactly how much sugar the package calls for (I believe it’s a cup. YIKES! Could you imagine that today?). Anyway, enjoy.

Here’s another classic for Camel cigarettes. There are so many great lines in this, it’s almost impossible to single them out. “What cigarette do you smoke doctor? Once again the brand named most was Camel.” Classic!

“See how Camels agree with your throat.” Oh yeah, that’s the first thing I think about when smoking a cigarette. Man, my throat feels GREAT!

But the thing that I thought was most interesting was the opening when it says this: “You know, if you were to follow a busy doctor as he makes his daily round of calls . . .” Round of calls? You mean doctors actually came to YOUR house back then? I think it’s amazing how many things have disappeared that used to be the norm: Doctor house calls, the milkman, door-to-door salesmen.

Check this one out.

Meshuga Syndrome #Award: nominations accepted

Meshuga is a Yiddish (Jewish) word meaning crazy, mad, insane. It is a humorous adjective that may not be translatable even if Websters defines it as above. I have decided that some of us suffer from the Meshuga Syndrome.  From the sublime to the extreme, here are some of those I believe (my opinion only) suffer from this syndrome:

Gone Dancing: on Overload

I can’t be alone in this, can I? Information and news screaming at me about the stimulus bill, health care, 401K adjustments. All very informative but I feel like screaming, stop the music! Or do I? Maybe I will just watch Dancing with the Stars (which I frankly never could get into but am now considering).

I am very impressed with the rate of response President Obama has created since just after the election. I don’t recall any president working as hard as quickly as he. I applaud him and his efforts and ultimately I believe we will all be okay. But the push to get information out in
