Many readers tell us that immigration is the most important issue facing the 2008 Presidential candidates. They’ve expressed the concern that people entering the country illegally take jobs for less pay and strain the welfare and health care systems—observations that seem to mesh with the experts’ commentary.
“I think the reason why immigration has become a front-burner issue in recent years is because it affects almost everyone’s life in many different ways,” says Ira Mehlman, media director for The Federation for American Immigration Reform. “When you combine legal and illegal immigrants that are moving into the U.S. every year, it’sbetween a million and a half and two million people.” Mehlman says this influx of people moving into the country has an effect on everything from jobs and education to health care and taxes.
